Pen y Cymoedd

The largest onshore wind farm in England and Wales.

Pen y Cymoedd Wind Farm is located in South Wales, with 76 turbines and a battery co-located at the site.

Biodiversity

The site hosts a significant peatland restoration programme in Southern Britain. Around 1,500 hectares are included in the project’s Habitat Management Plan, aimed at restoring peatland on the site over time.

Habitat restoration at Pen y Cymoedd

The Habitat Management Programme is aiming to restore a peatland habitat at landscape scale. We are working in partnership with a number of projects and organisations, building a hub of peatland expertise working on the site.

The community

The Pen y Cymoedd Community Fund Community Interest Company manages the wind farm’s community fund, with approximately £2.4 million allocated annually under the current agreement for local groups and businesses. Since the fund was established, more than 700 projects have been supported – from tourism businesses to sports clubs, nature projects to initiatives that invest in local skills.

Visiting the wind farm

The wind farm is located on the Welsh Government’s Woodland Estate. Many walkers and mountain bikers visit the site each year, with access to views and local trails.

One of those trails, Blade, was funded through the wind farm’s community benefit programme.

School groups regularly visit the site to learn about renewable energy and peatland restoration.
