Highlights

This section highlights six key areas in Vattenfall’s CSR work. Our objective is to contribute to sustainable development through efficient and reliable energy sources, which enhance our customers’ environment and quality of life.

The following are examples of how Vattenfall contributes toward laying the foundations for sustainable development;

Curbing Climate Change

Focusing on production safety

Investing in renewable energy

Attracting young talent

Efficient use of fossil fuels

Promoting market integration

Curbing Climate Change – A major challenge for society

Combating climate change is the most significant environmental challenge of our time. With grave environmental and social impacts predicted, urgent action is required to decrease carbon dioxide emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels.
As with all high emission industries, we have a responsibility to decrease our carbon dioxide emissions by improving efficiency within our existing power generation systems and developing innovative technologies. We are also involved in policy and political solutions, such as Vattenfall’s proposal for a burden-sharing model.

Focusing on production safety

Customers put confidence in Vattenfall’s ability to meet their needs for energy and heat without compromising safety. All of our operations are carried out with safety as a primary concern - no conflicts are allowed to exist between safety, generation and profitability.

Investing in renewable energy – large scale investments planned

In a world where renewable energy sources are expected to play an increasingly important role, Vattenfall’s ambition is to be a leading generator of renewable energy.
Vattenfall’s ambition is to take the lead in the use of renewable energy sources for electricity and heat generation. Primarily, we focus on hydropower, wind power and biomass, which have the best commercial prospects. In pursuit of our ambition we invested EUR 280 million in generation capacity for renewable energy sources during 2006 and plan to invest up to EUR 4 billion only in Sweden during the coming years.

Attracting young talent – being the employer of choice

The European energy sector is facing large retirements and students are showing a falling interest in science and technology. At the same time, Vattenfall´s extensive investment plans require employees with new and different competencies and skills. Our success in developing the operations depends to a large extent on how well we manage to attract and retain competence.

Using fossil fuels efficiently – innovating the use of fossil fuels

Fossil fuels will continue to play an important role in the future; our mission is to use them wisely and efficiently. Using new coal-based technologies as a bridging solution for the future, in combination with the use of gas, nuclear and renewable energy, seems like the only near-term solution that is environmentally, economically and socially viable. In fact, given our rising demand for energy that is affordable, acceptable and highly available make fossil fuels indispensable.

Promoting market integration – why we believe in an integrated European energy market

The EU initiative to establish a European energy policy stresses the need for taking steps towards a pan-European energy market. Vattenfall believes that such a market is necessary in order to achieve a competitive and secure energy supply while at the same time creating the prerequisites for curbing climate change.
