Vattenfall in South West Scotland

South Kyle II Wind Farm

Vattenfall is proposing the development of South Kyle II Wind Farm east of Dalmellington in East Ayrshire.

The project is currently in the pre-application stage and has recently been updated to an 11 wind turbine scheme.

Following public exhibitions in Dalmellington and New Cumnock this spring, we are continuing to seek feedback on this refreshed proposal.

Find out more and submit your feedback by visiting our virtual exhibition (below).

Designing the best wind farm we can

South Kyle II Wind Farm is a renewable energy proposal being developed by Vattenfall. Although adjacent to South Kyle Wind Farm (the 50 turbine project developed and now operated by Vattenfall), South Kyle II is a distinct and separate project.

First proposed as a 17 turbine wind farm with tip heights of up to 220m, after gathering initial feedback and environmental data the scheme was revised to a 9 turbine project with tip heights of up to 200m.

In late 2022, initial public exhibitions were held based on the 9 turbine layout, along with an online exhibition. More feedback was gathered, and throughout 2023 further environmental and technical data has been collected and assessed as part of our design review process. This has identified two additional locations within the existing site boundary that could host wind turbines, thus increasing the project’s potential for renewable energy generation and community benefits.

The revised layout now shows 11 wind turbines with visualisations and other details available to view in the online exhibition above.

Why wind power?

Scotland has set its goal to reach net zero by 2045, and renewable energy projects such as this will provide the platform for the decarbonisation of homes, businesses and transport needed to reach this ambition. Onshore wind can make a significant contribution, and we can deploy more powerful turbines than ever before.

Onshore wind is now a low cost way to generate electricity. Across the UK, there is already around 14GW of onshore wind built and it is now one of the cornerstones of the UK energy mix. It is estimated that by 2030, 30GW of onshore wind generated electricity will be required to meet our climate targets at the lowest cost to the consumer.

Onshore wind also brings benefits to host communities and the broader economy. We will offer a community investment packages in line with Scottish Government guidance for local communities to invest in the priorities which matter to them. Across the economy, there are many opportunities for Scottish businesses to get involved. Vattenfall estimates that 70% of our onshore wind expenditure has been spent with British businesses, ranging from environmental studies and civil engineering through to site security and catering. If you think your business could supply these projects, please let us know.
